Travellers snorkelling around whale sharks in Indonesia. Swimming with these gentle giants has been a popular activity for at least a decade.


It was 7:30 a.m., and between the brutal jet lag and a mild hangover, I was tempted to skip the whole whale shark excursion that everyone else in my sailing group couldn’t seem to stop talking about.

Several minutes later, however, with snorkel gear on, I was slipping into the water in Saleh Bay near Sumbawa, one of ’s sleepier islands, and found myself immediately transported to another world.
