pc28police have arrested a man in connection with an alleged hate crime at Hanlan’s Point on June 5 that left another man with significant injuries.
Elijah McGibbon, 24, of Toronto, was arrested Saturday and charged with one count of aggravated assault.
Police had previously said that a 24-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were walking to the west-end ferry docks, on the pc28Islands, when they became involved in a disagreement with a group. A man from that group “made homophobic comments” and two men from the group assaulted a 24-year-old, who suffered significant injuries.

A GoFundMe campaign organized by friends for the victim labelled the incident a “queer-bashing,” and identifies the victim as a member of Toronto’s LGBTQ community.
In a statement on Instagram, Pride pc28issued a community alert about the “vicious attack.”
“These kinds of attacks highlight why it is important that Pride pc28brings awareness of homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, in our community,” the statement reads. “It is heartbreaking to hear this happened during Pride Month — an attack on one is an attack on all.”
Police say the investigation is still active and say they still hope to speak with witnesses.
“This is a complex case and we still encourage witnesses to come forward. In particular, we want to speak to two women who we believe were in the area at the time and are described as white, in their 20s and with brown hair,” said Det.-Const. Lauren Hassard in a release.
Elijah McGibbon is scheduled to appear at Old City Hall court on Monday, July 26.
