When they arrived at the scene, they found two attached homes and a third nearby “fully engulfed” in flames. 

Around midnight, firefighters were still trying to extinguish heavy fire on the rooftops.

By 1 a.m., the roof on one of the homes had collapsed. Two of the homes were also structurally compromised with firefighters still in one, trying to fight the fire. Eventually crews switched to a “defensive” strategy, the fire service said, and only fought the blaze from outside the homes. 

One firefighter was taken to hospital with minor injuries as a precautionary measure, according pc28����fire and paramedics.

All the building occupants were evacuated safely.

The blaze was “stubborn” to battle because it engulfed three homes, pc28����Fire Platoon Chief Bob Cooke told reporters at the scene Tuesday morning.

“But other than that, there wasn’t anything unusual that made it hard to handle,” Cooke added.

Users on Reddit and X posted videos of fire trucks lining the street or tall flames burning.

Michael Corbiere was asleep in his apartment across the street, on the southeast corner of the intersection, when he awoke to emergency vehicles up and down the street. 

From where he was, he said, he could smell heavy smoke and watched firefighters on tall ladders trying to put the flames out. 

“The whole block is a haze of smoke,” he said. “Some of it might be from the water and the fire, so it might be like steam, but there’s smoke going at least four storeys up.”

“It looks like a complete emergency,” Corbiere added. “All of the roads are taped off and I can count at least 20 fire trucks with all of their lights on. It feels like quite a disaster.”

Some social media users said they could smell the smoke from their apartments in the area and called it “nauseating.”

“The whole neighbourhood is thick with smoke and the condos smell like smoke in the hallways and suites,” one person .

By 2:40 a.m., the fire had been extinguished but firefighters stayed on scene to monitor the site.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will be looking into the blaze on Tuesday morning, pc28����fire said.

pc28����firefighters have responded to “multiple challenging incidents” over the last two days, pc28����Fire Chief Jim Jessop said in a , thanking officials for their “courage and resilience.”

“The risks of this job are real ... and yet they show up without hesitation,” Jessop said.

Mayor Olivia Chow also wished officials a “speedy recovery” and thanked firefighters “for stepping up every single day to keep us all safe” in a .

Bathurst Street was closed in both directions between Queen and Adelaide streets but reopened around 6 a.m. The Bathurst 511 street car was rerouted with the 504D and C shuttle buses extending their operations to help accommodate riders. The 307 Bathurst Night Bus was also rerouted but has since resumed regular service.
