An Ontario farmer reported 45,000 baby chicks stolen two years ago. Now police have charged him with fraud and mischief

Police said they don’t know where the chicks are but believe they were “disposed of” by the farmer.

Following what officials called a “lengthy” investigation, the 41-year-old complainant from South Huron was arrested on Tuesday, officials said.


More than two years after a South Huron, Ont., farmer reported tens of thousands of baby chicks stolen, police have accused him of falsely reporting the theft, filing an insurance claim of more than $139,000 and “disposing” of the chicks.

On April 20, 2023, about 30,000 15-day-old chicks were reported stolen overnight from a farm, Huron OPP said in a news release. That figure was later revised and upped to 45,000 chicks, investigators said.
