The eyes of the world are now on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, from which the new pope will emerge. Meanwhile, we’re watching the pageantry unfold underneath, including a performance from the Papal Swiss Guard.

There is a chance — very small, but still a possibility —that a Canadian has been chosen. Quebec City Cardinal Gérald Lacroix is the most viable candidate, having served on Pope Francis’ nine-person advisory council. Cardinal Marc Ouellet, 80, is another option, but his age made him ineligible to vote in the conclave, hindering his odds.
