A new golden goal.
Connor McDavid’s overtime finish vaulted Canada to a 3-2 victory over the United States to win the inaugural Four Nations Face-off tournament, and prompted lots of passionate responses from Canadian fans.
The game found itself at the centre of rising tensions between the two countries, intensified by U.S. President Donald Trump continued annexation threats towards Canada before Thursday’s game.
“With FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, (Canada) will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” Trump said in a post to social media.
“We will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome,” he said.
Justin Trudeau posted his reaction minutes after the game.
You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.

This tournament was McDavid’s first chance to suit up for Canada since playing in the 2015 World Juniors. The overtime winner won’t do much to quell the saviour comparisons, with Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney even joining in.

Canadian forward Brandon Hagel and American forward Matthew Tkachuk traded verbal jabs (after trading physical jabs in the first fight of Feb. 15’s game) about Team U.S.A.‘s group chat. Tkachuk told the media pre-game “Maybe their team doesn’t like each other if they don’t have group chats.”
Canadian fans did not forget the comment
at least they have their group chat so they can comfort each other

And neither did Brandon Hagel.
