Kristen Campbell is sticking to her process.
The reigning Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) goalie of the year holds high expectations for herself and the pc28Sceptres in their first year under their new identity.
“Last year was such a learning experience for everyone,” she said. “All the experiences you go through, all the lows and highs … just to have that confidence knowing that I’ve experienced a lot and can handle anything that comes my way.”
She posted a .927 save percentage last season in 22 games but came out of the gates slow. The Manitoba product allowed 18 goals in the first six games, including four pc28losses.
Campbell quickly turned it around, backstopping the now-Sceptres to an 11-game winning streak in which she started 10 times. The Sceptres rode the winning streak to the league’s best regular-season record.
Although they exited the post-season disappointed, they still have plenty to look forward to this season, with the additions of new players this off-season and many successful faces returning to the club.
Campbell was one of the high notes last season, and she’s looking to continue the consistency she showed in the second half right into this year.
Her approach is simple: take it one day at a time. However, each day includes a personal evaluation of her previous performances and a review of what she can improve before bringing that to practice. This helped her recover last year, and she doesn’t expect a change in her philosophy this time.
“Sticking to the process in the way that I do things was what allowed me to show up as the best version of myself and help our team win,” she said.

Her success last season awarded her a look with Team Canada at the Rivalry Series against the U.S. earlier this month. Sceptres head coach Troy Ryan is also behind the bench for the Canadian national team and brought her on board.
Campbell started Game 1 against the U.S. but struggled in her lone appearance. She allowed five goals on fifteen shots before being pulled after the first period.
Despite that, Ryan thinks she’s come into training camp with confidence.
“I think she’s rebounded well from that,” he said. “We went through it last year. We had a slow start. I’m very confident (Campbell) will be at the top of her game right from day one this year.
“Even talking to players, everyone says she’s in a great place. I know she’s done a ton of work through the off-season to set her up for success. We’re looking forward to getting started with her again.”
Campbell’s anticipation for the season is growing, and it’s expanded now that the PWHL has announced they’re headed to Vancouver for a neutral-site game at Rogers Arena against the Montreal Victoire.
She’s never played at Rogers Arena before and has family connections to the West Coast. She’s expecting around 15 people to be in the building, including her Mom, who’ll fly out to watch.
However, she’s trying to stay in the present, using training camp to find her footing in preparation for opening day on Nov. 30.
“I’m feeling really good,” she said. “I think just taking one focus area is kind of my mentality. Doing that day by day will give you some pretty great results on the ice.”

R.J. Johnston/pc28StarNew Sceptres goaltender Raygan Kirk is already leaning on Campbell for advice before her debut season in the PWHL.
The two are from Manitoba and have a pre-established relationship, as Kirk has assisted Campbell at her goalie school. They were also invited to the Canadian national team’s fall camp, where they played on the same team.
“It’s so easy to ask her questions and get feedback,” Kirk said. “She’s been super helpful, and we’re all really connected as a goalie group.”
The Sceptres drafted Kirk in the seventh round in the 2024 PWHL Draft. Carly Jackson rounds out the goaltenders for the Sceptres. Kirk said the trio is planning a dinner later this week to help bond before exhibition games begin.
Ryan believes Campbell and Kirk’s relationship will be beneficial throughout the year.
“It’ll be huge,” he said. “When you have the sort of history with each other, you don’t have to rebuild a friendship. It’s already there. The connection is there, the respect level is there, so they’ll be a great group together, and (Jackson) fits with anybody.”
