Five boys are facing charges after two students were stabbed at a bus stop outside of a Scarborough high school on Monday afternoon, police say.
Police responded to reports of the double stabbing near just before 1:50 p.m. on Monday.
Police allege the five suspects approached the victims while they were waiting at a bus stop, surrounded them and assaulted them while they demanded the victims’ cellphones and wallets, officers said in a Tuesday. Two 15-year-old students were stabbed in the assault, investigators said.
The two male victims — both of whom are students at nearby Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate — sustained minor injuries, officials said. After they were stabbed, the victims returned to the school, where they reported the incident and their injuries, according to an email from the school’s principal to students and parents.
The stabbing victims are Grade 9 and 10 students, a friend of one of the boys told the Star. The Star is not naming her because she is a minor.
One of the victims had stitches on his knee from slipping a few days earlier and wouldn’t have been able to run, the friend said.
She expected one of the boys to wave or give a thumbs up as first responders whisked him away on a stretcher, but he didn’t, she said.
“It’s like he couldn’t move,” the friend said. “His entire face was bandaged, except for one eye. It was really bad.”
The five suspects charged are all minors:
- A boy, 12, from Oakville
- A boy, 13, from Toronto
- A boy, 14, from Toronto
- A boy, 15, from Oakville
- A boy, 15, from Toronto
Each youth is facing two counts of robbery with an offensive weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm and a charge of possessing a weapon dangerous to public peace.
Police do not yet know whether the suspects knew the victim, acting inspector Todd Jocko told reporters at the scene on Monday evening.
Laurier is co-operating with police as they investigate, the email to parents said.
The school wasn’t put on lockdown or hold and secure over the stabbings, a TDSB spokesperson added.
In May 2019, an 18-year-old man died and three suspects were arrested after a stabbing just outside Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute. The victim was a student at Laurier.
At the scene on Monday afternoon, police were collecting evidence, marking blood spots on the ground that led from a bus stop at the southwest corner of Livingston Road and Guildwood Parkway towards the school. Police tape was extended from the bus stop to a footpath towards the school off of Guildwood Parkway.
