Every week, there are those who inspire us and those who disappoint us. Welcome to Champs ‘n Chumps, a new weekly feature in the Star in which we shower praise on our best and lob (virtual) tomatoes at the people who have let us down. Plus: scroll to the bottom for the big number that defined the week.
Champ: Lilly Singh
Lilly Singh’s role as Chief Hype Officer for the Tempo is perfect for the self-described “pc28girlie through and through.” And she’s put her money where her mouth is as co-owner of the WNBA franchise.
Chump: Douglas Cifu

Can one ascend to the heights of hockey without learning how to use social media? Yes! Florida man Douglas Cifu fed the trolls this week and was subsequently suspended from his gig as Panthers vice chairman.
Champ: Anita Anand

When you think “Trudeau cabinet,” the words “consistently effective” don’t leap to mind. But Anita Anand overperformed by securing vaccines, supporting Ukraine, and heartily deserves her new role as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Chump: Adam Vaughan

As a politician, Adam Vaughan described himself as “the go-to guy for potshots.” As Therme lobbyist, he wants a “conversation rather than a fight.” Maybe a soothing megaspa visit would calm his opponents down?
The Big Number: the figure that defined the week
The Big Number
50%
Why does gender parity matter in a federal cabinet? Ten years ago, Justin Trudeau answered that question in the glib style that came to define his tenure: Because it’s 2015! This week, Mark Carney introduced his new 28-member cabinet as purpose-built, smaller, more focused, and empowered — but never mentioned the equal numbers of men and women. Is that because the previous Liberal government made this practice an unremarkable fact of politics? Or because there are so many other things to discuss now, from middle-class tax cuts to trade barriers to energy projects? Perhaps both — and definitely because it’s 2025.
