Just as each person’s goals for retirement living are unique, so too are their journeys to finding a community that aligns with their vision. In this series, The Next Chapter, we highlight how The Bluffs at Huron, an active living retirement community in scenic Goderich, simplifies life, provides connection, and imbues residents with a new lease on life. This time, we reconnect with Sharon, who was looking for social interactions, year-round wellness opportunities, and proximity to nature in her golden years.

“If you’d asked me what my dream retirement looked like before my partner John and I moved to The Bluffs two and a half years ago, the truth is, I would have said that it involved an affordable bungalow in or around Kingston, and possibly a few activities I could find time for here and there.
“There’s no way I would have ever imagined that a quick conversation with my hairdresser would have caused us to take a trip to Goderich to visit The Bluffs at Huron, which would change our lives forever.
“And even if I had been able to dream bigger, I truly don’t believe that we could have found a more perfect retirement experience if we tried. From the moment we arrived, I’ve felt like we were meant to be here, from our welcoming, caring, and like-minded neighbours to the wide range of clubs, groups and wellness activities we love, to our stress-free home ownership experience. I’ve never seen or heard of another community like this and I know most people living here feel the same way.

“I think a lot of the camaraderie and deep sense of community has to do with a mindset residents choose to have — they’re focused on making connections with each other, living life to its fullest, and looking for ways to enjoy every day. No one is left out, but no one is forced to engage, either.
“People can be as involved or uninvolved as they like, and because there are clubs and activities for every interest, plus regular dances, potlucks, street parties, singles events, and holiday parties, those who do want to connect can and do find their tribe quickly.
“Having so much nature surrounding us, from golf courses to walking and biking trails to Lake Huron’s stunning sunrise and sunset views, is also incredible and for me, it’s the cherry on top. Being able to sit and watch the waves, walk the beach, collect driftwood, and dig for seashells with John never gets old.
“It really does feel like we’re living the dream most days. We went from not expecting to be able to afford a house again to buying a home in a community that’s welcoming, social, and full of fun new opportunities to connect with so many like-minded people. We definitely didn’t envision this as our retirement experience but now that we’re here, we don’t want to be anywhere else.”
Not only do the on-site amenities at The Bluffs at Huron simplify daily life and foster a warm sense of community, but it’s ideal location in Goderich enhances everyday convenience, activities and entertainment. The Goderich Sunset Golf Club, located just minutes from the retirement community, is commonly referred by residents as the best possible “Next door neighbour”.
The club offers an 18-hole golf course that is perfect for any skill level. Golfers will experience expertly crafted holes with well thought out sand traps, water challenges and trees. This stunning waterfront golf course is an exceptional addition to the retirement community and continues to be a community favourite.
If exploring local artists and talents is of more interest to you, you won’t want to miss the annual Celtic Roost Festival one of Ontario’s biggest art festivals. The event, which residents look forward to every year, is held in August and is hosted in Lions’ Harbour Park just a nine-minute drive from residence. This three-day festival is filled with local art vendors, music talents and performances, attracting tourists from all over the world.
Goderich is known as “Canada’s prettiest town” and welcomes you with open arms to call this place your home and to create lasting memories beginning at The Bluffs at Huron.
