The cherry red car is boxed in by police cruisers, as two pc28officers walk up, one on each side.
There are six people in the Infiniti — two up front, four squished into the back.
The officer on the passenger side pulls the latch on the front seat to move it forward, giving the passengers more room to get out.
A young woman steps out. The officer is speaking softly. “Sorry, sorry,” he apologizes, as he helps her out.
“Come out,” the officer says next to the male passenger who was sitting beside her. That’s when the traffic stop turns chaotic.
The young male in the back seat — wearing a white hoodie — scoots forward, pulls out what appears to be a gun, and fires it toward the officer.
The reaction is immediate. The officers scramble for cover, a woman begins to scream, and a gunfight ensues.
Police bodycam footage obtained by the Star captures the frantic exchange of gunfire that broke out following a traffic stop in North York this week — just as news emerged Tuesday that the 16-year-old passenger died in hospital.
WARNING: The following police video obtained by the Star shows an exchange of gunfire that led to the death of a 16-year-old.
The video sheds light on the actions of two police officers who are now under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the provincial police oversight agency.
According to the SIU, police pulled over the red Infiniti because it didn’t have a front licence plate. The back plate also appeared to be obscured by a tinted cover.
Surveillance video footage, obtained from a local business, shows the vehicle stopped on the south side of Sheppard Avenue West, near Bathurst Street, around 10:50 p.m. on Sunday.
Moments later, the passenger in the hoodie fires two rounds at the officer standing on his side of the car.
The officer instantly steps back. His body camera shows him grabbing his weapon and firing into the Infiniti. He yells but the words are hard to make out.
The surveillance footage, taken from a different angle, shows the second officer taking cover behind the front hood of the car before firing his gun at the car multiple times.
The audio from the bodycam footage records at least 10 shots in total.
Two other individuals can be seen running for cover. One person takes shelter next to a police car while the other appears to crouch down on the grass.
The camera cuts out. The next scene viewed by the Star shows officers pulling the injured passenger from the vehicle before performing chest compressions. He was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition.
On Tuesday, the SIU announced the 16-year-old had died from his injuries. The boy’s name has not been released.
According to pc28police, the officers involved were not hurt and the remaining five occupants were arrested as part of its investigation in relation to the traffic stop.
A 20-year-old pc28man, a 18-year-old pc28woman, and three female youths — two 17-year-olds from Brampton and a 16-year-old from pc28— are charged with possessing a loaded firearm, possessing a firearm with no licence and occupying a vehicle with a firearm, police spokesperson Stephanie Sayer said told the Star on Tuesday.
One of the youths is additionally charged with failing to comply with a release order.
The SIU, which probes all police-involved shootings, has assigned seven investigators to the case. SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said they are in the process of reviewing body-worn camera footage and in-car camera footage from the police vehicles.
